Volunteer In Your Community

Volunteering can be a great way of giving back to the world around you. You could spend your next vacation away from doing subsurface utility engineering donating your expertise and experience in a third world country to help them gain a clean water system or you could just spend a couple of hours a week with a less fortunate child in your own neighborhood. There are many reasons to seek out a volunteer position and all of them will leave you feeling more fulfilled in your life.

The leading reason to volunteer is always going to be to help people out with a part of their life or career. No one can get through life without needing help at some point and many of the people who advise and guide us along the way ask for nothing in return. You could work with horse fencing supplies for the weekend to help build a new safe fence at a horseback riding summer camp or you could prepare a meal for those who's children are in the hospital at a Ronald McDonald house. There are many things that you can do to just offer your help and support.

Another reason to volunteer is to participate in an activity that you enjoy. If you're currently working as a process calibrator for a local factory but have always loved to build things you could spend the weekend working with an organization like Habitat for Humanity or help build sets for a local community theater production. If you love to travel you will get a whole new experience in a different part of the world by volunteering your time at an orphanage in South Africa. There are many volunteer opportunities out there that will feed your passion as well as help out those in need.

You can also volunteer to build your own skills and expertise. If you would like to add a few lines to your resume to help you move from working with product diverters in an entry-level position to working in a position with more chance of advancement that volunteering could be the key to getting you there. There are also lots of opportunities for people to donate their time in a new industry where they are not yet sure they will fit. You could want to work in public relations but are not sure if you have the necessary skills. Take a night and volunteer for a local charity event or city festival. They are always looking for more help.

If you're a student and are attempting to experience a little of the career world before diving in than a volunteer internship could be perfect for you. You could work for a vet London Ontario based for the summer between school terms or could take a year off to intern at one of the country's leading music labels. This is usually an experience you will never forget and can really help you get started in a difficult career.
